Exodus 20 & Deuteronomy 5

Melinda wins the prize for being the first to answer my question about where to find the Ten Commandments! Congratulations, Melinda!

The first four commandments focus on our relationship to God, and the other six focus on our relationship to people. My husband says all the time that God's number one priority is relationship. He created you to enjoy a personal relationship with Him, and He has created a plan for us to enjoy relationships with the people around us.

On a side note, feel free to tell us about how & when you began your relationship with Christ. If you are wondering what it would be like to know God personally, feel free to email me at tydyd_89@yahoo.com.

I found the following summarized list at http://www.ten-commandments.us/

The Ten Commandments of God As Given By Moses
Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image.
Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Honour thy father and thy mother.
Thou shalt not kill.
Thou shalt not commit adultery.
Thou shalt not steal.
Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
Thou shalt not covet.

What are your thoughts about why we as Christians observe these 10 commands, but we hardly even read, much less observe, the other laws God gave to Moses on Mt. Sinai?

Exodus 20:18-21 The people wanted Moses to talk to God, but they were afraid to have God talk to them personally. Hallelujah! Jesus opened the way for you and me to speak to the Father face to face. Moses told the people that their fear of God would keep them from sinning. For you and me, it is our love for God that should keep us from sinning. The people remained at a distance. Jesus invites us to draw close to Him. I am so grateful to be under the New Covenant of the blood of Christ!

Tomorrow's reading will be Leviticus 1, 10-11, 16, and 25-26. We may break it into a couple of days if needed.

Exodus 12-14

When I read Exodus 4 early this morning, these verses stood out to me. "22 Then say to Pharaoh, 'This is what the LORD says: Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I told you, "Let my son go, so he may worship me." But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son." God spoke these words to Moses before he even returned to Egypt, before Moses had even talked to Pharoah, before any of the plagues happened. So, if God already knew that Pharoah was going to say, "No," then why send Moses and Aaron to talk to him? Why go through the other plagues and not just jump straight to this one?

Exodus 12:24 "Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. 25 When you enter the land that the LORD will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26 And when your children ask you, 'What does this ceremony mean to you?' 27 then tell them, 'It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.' " Then the people bowed down and worshiped." God spoke these words to Moses before the night that the death angel passed over. He is already handing them the victory and telling them they will celebrate it for years to come. In fact, Passover is still celebrated today, over 3000 years later! Wow!

Exodus 13:17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, "If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt." 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. Has God taken you on any detours? I would much rather take the short cut most of the time, but I would miss out on the miracle of God parting the Red Sea for me.

Exodus 14:4 "And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue them. But I will gain glory for myself through Pharaoh and all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD." Why did God place the Israelites between a rock and a hard place? To gain glory for Himself and so the enemy would know that He is LORD!

Exodus 14:13 Moses answered the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the LORD will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still." Does this speak to anyone besides me?

Exodus 14:22 I love that the Israelites walked on "dry" ground, not muddy, or sticky, but dry. God is all-powerful, and I want to see His power in every area of my life!

I think we'll save Exodus 20 for tomorrow. The 10 Commandments will require its own post. Do you know what other chapter in the Bible contains the 10 Commandments?

Exodus 1-5

This is our next reading. I leave for a couples getaway this morning, so feel free to make comments even if I don't get to post anything until I get back.

Exodus 1:12-13 "But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and spread; so the Egyptians came to dread the Israelites and worked them ruthlessly." God blessed the Israelites, which brought persecution from their masters, which resulted in more blessing from God, which brought more persecution. Vicious cycle. Does God's work in your life ever follow this pattern? Where does the church in America get the idea that being a Believer is a piece of cake?

I am so proud of the midwives who were not afraid to obey God rather than men! I have had to make a stand in the workplace before, and frankly, it gave me quite a charge! Try it some time, and you may like it.

I understand why Pharoah wanted all the male children killed, and I realize that males were highly valued and women weren't in the culture. Why didn't he just tell the midwives to kill all the Hebrew babies? Ok, weird question, I know.

Exodus 2 Again, I am proud of Moses' mama for obeying God rather than men. Moses' mama knew that God had a very special purpose for her child. She took a risk and trusted God to protect her son. Do I go out on a limb to make certain God's plans for my children will be accomplished? I'm not talking about manipulating people and circumstances for selfish gain. I'm talking about going the extra mile to make sure my children get the training they need to be a follower of the One True God.

Here we see in the life of Moses that God allowed tragedy so that He could get Moses to follow Him. God took the tragedy and used it to mold Moses into a strong leader for His people. Sometimes God has to make us miserable or uncomfortable to get us to move where He wants us. Sometimes God takes us to the desert so we can have time to get to know Him better. Sometimes God walks us through the stuff so we will have a story to tell that will draw others closer to Him.

Exodus 2:25 "So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them." I hope to smile! I want it to say God was anguished or distraught or stayed up all night worrying and fretting. OK, so I know that is not in God's character, but it's in mine. When I am in dire circumstances, I want assurance that God is thinking of me every moment of every day and that He hasn't forgotten that I've got a problem He needs to take care of pronto.

See you soon,
Dana

Job 38-42

Job 38:1 "Then the Lord answered Job out of the storm." I'm not sure why these words jumped off the page at me today, but I know there have been lots of times when I have begged God to answer me in the midst of storms in my life. And boy, God gave Job quite an answer. I guess God told him just how the cow ate the cabbage, huh! God is such a detail man, and these chapters definitely showcase His handiwork.

Job 40:3-5 Then Job answered the Lord: "I am unworthy--how can I reply to you? I put my hand over my mouth. I spoke once, but I have no answer--twice, but I will say no more." Good answer. I'm thinkin' this might be a good verse to tape up next to my telephone.

Job 40:6 God speaks to Job out of the storm again. I just picture Job standing outside looking up to heaven with a blast of Northeastern Colorado wind blowing His hair straight back, his eyes squinted against the dust, bracing himself like a man to take his beating, just as God told him to do.

The rest of chapter 40 and then chapter 41 speak of the behemoth and the leviathan. I have heard it taught that these are dinosaurs and dragons. What do you think?

Job 42:2 "I know that you can do all things; no plan of yours can be thwarted." Great answer once again. This would be a great life verse for those of you who are still looking for one!

Job 42:6 Job repented. What did he have to repent of? I thought he stayed fairly blameless through the whole ordeal. Do I have that attitude about myself? Do I think, well at least my attitude doesn't stink as bad as those of Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar? Even though Job did not speak out against the acts of God, maybe he harbored hurt feelings. Perhaps in his heart and mind, he had begun to question God's plan for him. I know I find myself in that place far too often. I need to repent.

Job 42:10 The Lord makes Job twice as prosperous as before! Hallelujah! I am so happy for Job. It does not mention his wife. Hmmm. Verse 11 says his brothers and sisters came to celebrate with him. It doesn't say if his wife repented of her bad attitude. God blesses Job with 10 more children, and Scripture leaves us wondering if Job's wife ever said she was sorry for questioning God's plan. Job saw his family tree grow four generations. I sure hope for his sake that his wife was pleasant to live with. (Look up quarrelsome wife in Proverbs.)

Job 1-3

Did you expect we would jump over to Job so soon in our chronological study of the Bible? I knew that Job had an early date, but honestly, I expected we wouldn't study it until somewhere along with Judges. Check out this link that gives some of the most common understandings of where Job lived and when. http://www.bible.org/page.php?page_id=903

It mentions that one of the major reasons to believe that Job lived before Moses is because Job made sacrifices for his children rather than taking the sacrifice to be made by the priest. Also, Jewish tradition places Job in the time of the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph).

Job Chapter 1 Have you ever had a day like Job's, when you stood and watched your world crumble around you?

Job Chapter 2 When I feel physically ill, it is very difficult to keep a positive outlook and stay focused on God's goodness. I'm thinking Job's wife, bless her little heart, would not have been a very good hospice nurse. LORD, help me be an encouraging wife when my husband is feeling low. Job's friends do the right thing in verse 13, "Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights. No one said a word to him, because they saw how great his suffering was." They should have stuck with this tactic because everything they say and do from here on out just makes things worse.

Job 3 Job is feeling utter despair and wishes he had never been born. Ever been there? Verse 25, "What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me." What is the worst that could ever happen to you? Job's worst fears came true even though God called him blameless and upright. Even when the worst happened, Job survived. He kept the faith, and stuck to the discipline of praising God. And Job didn't have a supportive men's Bible study group to encourage him. When tragedy strikes, ladies, it is not the end of the world for us. God may or may not restore our fortunes, but will we keep praising Him?

Genesis 12, 15, & 22

As I mentioned before, this chronological study of the Bible is going to hit the high points. Today's study focuses on Abraham and Isaac, and completely skips over references to Abraham's other family members. I hope God piques your interest enough to bring you back to study Genesis sometime soon.

You will want to read the chapters in the Bible before reading my blog each day because I am just writing thoughts and questions I have about the text. I hope you won't be disappointed that I am not writing complete descriptions of the stories. I want you to read it for yourself. Each morning I have my Bible open beside me and my laptop in my lap, and I am writing as I read. If you don't have your Bible handy, open a second browser tab for www.biblegateway.com and read the chapters there.

Genesis 12 Was Abram excited or fearful, full of anticipation or dread? "Leave . . . and go to a land I will show you." He didn't even know where God was taking Him! I'm a map reader, and I want our trip completely planned before I pack my bags. Was Abram's wife Sarai a willing traveler?

Genesis 12:3b "and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you." Great promise! God reiterates the promise in Genesis 22:18.

Can you believe what Abram put Sarai through when they came to Egypt?? He does it again in Genesis 20!! Talk about an interesting marriage . . . .

Genesis 15:1b "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward." God is our reward, ladies! We must stop chasing after material blessings and realize that all we need is Jesus.

Abram is worried since he and Sarai have no children, and a servant in their household will inherit the estate. In verse 5 God takes Abram outside and says, "Look up at the heavens and count the stars--if indeed you can count them. So shall your offspring be." And Abram had faith even though he would not see evidence of the promise for years to come. His son Isaac was not born until the year after Abram and Sarai receive new names (Abraham and Sarah) at the ages of 99 and 90.

I love the story in Genesis 15 of God's covenant with Abram. In one of Beth Moore's studies (was it in Believing God??) she goes into great detail about covenants. So interesting.

Genesis 22 Can you even imagine God calling Abraham to sacrifice his only son? Abraham did not tell Isaac the plan, and I'm guessing Sarah wasn't clued in and invited along either!

In verse 8 Abraham expresses faith that God will provide the offering for the sacrifice. Yet, Abraham is obedient to what God had told him, and he binds Isaac and places him on the altar. Can you put yourself in Abraham's sandals? I would have been questioning God the entire time, and I'm not certain I would have even made the trek up the mountain. Because of Abraham's obedience, however, God does miraculously provide a ram for the sacrifice. Because of Abraham's obedience, Abraham comes to know God personally as "The LORD Will Provide." How many blessings of God have I missed out on because of my lack of faith in His provision?

Genesis 1-3

Whoo hoo! Here we go, girls! Everyone strapped in and ready to ride?

Genesis 1:1 "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth." This is one of the basics of the Christian faith. Do you truly believe that Almighty God completed the creation of the universe in 6 days and rested on the 7th?

Hebrews 11:2 "By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God's command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible." If we can't believe that God was able to form all of creation in a literal 6 days, then we can't believe that God is capable to transform our lives. Have you invited God to work any miracles in your family today? Do you believe He can do it?

Genesis 2:20-23 I love that God formed Eve out of Adam's rib. Trent's grandmother had a little poem she loved to recite, saying that woman was not created out of a part of Adam's foot that he should trample her nor out of a part of his head that he should rule over her but out of his side that they should walk side by side together. (It went something like that, anyway. Someone please correct me if you know the real version of the poem.) Am I being a suitable helper for my husband today?

Genesis 2:24 Why is this verse here in the passage about Adam and Eve? They didn't have a father and mother to leave!

Genesis 3 Dear Jesus, help me to resist temptation today. Help me not to entice others to sin today, as Eve invited Adam to join her in rebellion against God's commands.

Genesis 3:21-24 I can feel God's heart breaking as He made suitable clothing for His children. As He killed the animals for the garments of skin, He was offering the first blood sacrifice for the sin of mankind. Imagine God's sorrow as He looked ahead to picture all the sacrifice for sin that would have to be made throughout the ages, and the ultimate sacrifice of His One and Only Son Jesus. Imagine God's tears as He "drove the man out." God's perfect plan for Adam and Eve would not be fulfilled because of selfish choices they had made, choices for temporary pleasure. What choices will you make today? Do they lead you down the path of God's best for you, or do they drive you away from His perfect plan?

Bible Study

I have wanted to do a chronological study of the Bible for quite some time. I found one on Biblegateway.com, and I want you do do the study with me.

http://www.biblegateway.com/resources/readingplans/chronological.php
Go to this link, and you can print a copy if you wish. We will hit the high points through the Bible and see God's timeline laid out for us. The plan says it will take us only 61 days, but I'm guessing some of us might take our time here and there. For example, Day 4 lists several chapters to read, and it will probably take me more than one day.

As we go along, I will list some questions I have as well as some thoughts about how God works in our lives. I want you to ask questions too and respond with what God is telling you.

Are you going to come along for the ride??
Dana

Welcome!

God is leading me on an incredible journey of faith, and I want you to join me! My life verse is Psalm 34:3, "Come glorify the Lord with me, let us exalt His Name together." Will you join me, and we will study His Word together?

Start by telling me your life verse and why it is so special to you.

Are you curious to know what a life verse is and want help finding a Scripture that will guide you in following God? Let me know!

Praising God for His indescribable gift!
Dana
